The Local Project chat with Design Director Justin Hutchinson
As Design Director of Kett furniture, Justin Hutchinson is at the helm of a talented team of designers based in Melbourne’s creative suburb Brunswick. For Justin, each day is a new opportunity to bring balance to the many ideas that inform Kett’s collections.
His reductionist approach involves sketching, paring back, and building clarity in every piece. This process is guided by a commitment to honesty and truth to material, ensuring that each design is functional and beautiful.
“What brought me to designing was a love of problem solving, visual problem solving. Rather than consuming the object, you create the object. It’s a different sort of sensibility. I love tables, but drawing the table, interpreting a table in different ways, you process that desire. You’re being creative in the process, rather than consumptive”.
